It is one of those reckless nights
Where the crammed seats are so close
The seatbelts jostle one another with
Bony elbows and the tarpaulin keeps spilling
Over pawing for our attention to hold it
Up – needy pet we have no mind to
Take care of. Too much to feel. So
We threw caution to the wind and
Saw it stream behind us on the highway
All smoke flare and blinding lights
Guiding a crashing plane irreversibly into a
Wedge in my heart. Our eyes slowly
Stutter shut to avoid witnessing the
Calamity. One by one, falling
Asleep or perching our heavy heads
On the slow
Rising
Falling shoulders
Lost in the plume of sleepy haze.
The wind of the eager driver is
Urgent, loosening hair and taking our
Breath away, snagging at the leash
Between our tired grips and the
Kite of worry and care that we have
Released into the night. Nothing
Worries us anymore. When the wind
Stills, our hands are smarting
And bleary eyed we see our return and
Faces burning with a smile.
