Not in my capacity as a Literature student III

Despite and Still (my favourite lines) -Robert Graves

We have been such as draw
The losing straw —
You of your gentleness,
I of my rashness,
Both of despair —
Yet still might share
This happy will:
To love despite and still.

It has such a nice ring to it and makes me feel like growing old together with someone. Let us just simply enjoy it.

She Tells Her Love While Half Asleep -Robert Graves

She tells her love while half asleep,
In the dark hours,
With half-words whispered low:

As Earth stirs in her winter sleep
And puts out grass and flowers
Despite the snow,
Despite the falling snow.

ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE FREAKIN BEAUTIFUL POEMS! Makes me wish that someone would write these kinda things about me because everything the words have touched became gentle and amazing.

I think this poem has to be read aloud and (allow me to taint the simple enjoyment that comes with this poem) the words chosen all sound smooth and rounded. I am no expert in the English language but most of the consonants feel like “half-sounds” (for example take the third line, with the “W” and “L” and “H”, most of these are as though they are pronounced with air). This is why the final two lines stand out so much because “despite” sounds different. It is the only word where the “I” is pronounced as it is, and the combination of “sp” and “t” sound makes it stand out as a clean line in contrast to the other “muffly” sounds.

My Ghost (my favourite lines) -Robert Graves

Pride brought its punishment: thus to be haunted
By my own ghost whom, much to my disquiet,
All would-be friends and open enemies
Boldly identified and certified
As me, including him in anecdotal
Autobiographies.
Love, should you meet him in the newspapers
In planes, on trains, or at large get-togethers,
I charge you, disregard his foolish capers;
Silence him with a cold unwinking stare
Where he sits opposite you at table
And let all present watch amazed, remarking
On how little you care.
