Retro Mom Look

I have come around to accept the fact that some people just look younger than they actually are. And I am not one of them. In fact I have heard too many people mistake me for a university student (that’s the mildest) or an office lady. Nothing inherently bad about that, we all have to learn to stop taking offense.

img_7777I think it befits a teenager to be dressed in shorts and short sleeves. A pink pin-striped dress though? I can literally picture my mum wearing it with some giant pearl ear stud and short “Shanghai” curls (if you know what I mean).

Throw on a white embroidered shirt and you look like you do not own any trendy jackets and have opted to age gracefully. (I’m sorry that sounded more offensive than I intended).

What I like about this combination is the muted colour scheme that reminds me of faded or washed out vintage pictures. I freaking love the layered neckline look as well. The grey round neck below the striped collars look really good for some reason and the eyelet details below that looks like another giant lapel. Strangely, I really dig the whole layered old lady look, which must to a certain extent explain why most of the time I am told that I am such a mom.

The length of the dress must seem misaligned with the whole mom vibe, but I mean, I suppose teenagers should still go on and keep wearing them shorts and miniskirts.

The thing here is, I will never actually wear this retro mom look out with friends. Still it was a really fun idea to work with and sometimes I look back on this blog as a way for me to experiment with clothes and try these kind of things. (I may be actually preparing for my wardrobe when I hit my 60’s) but it works as an exercise for me to avoid falling into dressing for a trend or dressing to fit in. The holidays are finally upon us, hopefully I will have more of a life and get opportunities to go out and frolic about, and hopefully there will be more of the experimenting and updating on this blog.
