2 ways to the same jumpsuit

Alright, as a student one of our biggest woes is that we don’t make our own income, so there is no way we can invest so much into our clothing(#brokekids). That is why I try to milk everything I have and get the most mileage out of them, including making it appropriate for different occasions. No way am I going to go out of my way to purchase formal clothes because there is hardly any opportunity for us to wear them, so here is my take on the same jumpsuit (meant for formal events) and wearing it two different ways.

The Lady Way

For a change from the usual dresses, a sleek jumpsuit like this is empowering. This is a great throwback to my secondary school graduation dinner: minimal accessories to keep it sleek, and a nice pop of red lip to go with it.

What makes a piece look formal and lady-like: simple colour combinations and simple accessories. The statement in the outfit is its minimalism and familiarity. Black, white or red are colours that are associated with what we mostly think of when it comes to black-tie events, so just go along with the timeless, tried and true combination for formal events.

The Eccentric Way

One way to bring the jumpsuit down to a casual look is to layer a blouse beneath it. I find that the exposed skin in formal dresses and jumpsuits make it dauntingly black-tie like, so a good statement blouse underneath that makes it street-appropriate (not that this look is anything less than eccentric). This strange white and blue striped top makes a crazy statement with its sleeves and collar and that in itself already strikes it out from the formal wear arena.

Strange accessories that you don’t expect to see during formal events are also key to toning down the notch for this white jumpsuit. The cute feminine earrings balances the masculinity of the top. On top of that, white and blue always struck me as a very scholarly and librarian like colour combination, so the round spectacles help to tie in that bookworm vibe that I very much enjoy.

And there we have it, two rather strange ways to look at the same jumpsuit, but it serves its purpose of making sure to get the most use out of clothes that we buy for a single formal event. Since Chinese New Year is coming, that means more clothes are coming our way, let’s consume less and get clothes that will truly last us through all kinds of events!
